The Visitors Center at Fort Edwards

Overview

The Fort Edwards site is located along the northern boundary of Capon Bridge, in what is now West Virginia just north of U.S. 50. Only 20 miles west of Winchester, Virginia, the fort site is within a two hour ride from Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, and within three hours from Pittsburgh and Richmond. Situated along the scenic Cacapon River in eastern Hampshire County, it remains surrounded by fields, forests and mountains much as it was in the 1750's when France and England were in their final showdown for possession of the North American continent.

The Fort Edwards Visitors Center includes a learning area for presentations, as well as exhibits and artifact display cases that show what has been found during archaeological digs at our site to date.

School Programs

Plan a school field trip soon! We would like to invite all school students to come and visit our site. You can learn about some of West Virginia's earliest history through our exhibits. You can also learn about a very important era of early Amercian history. We have specifically invited every 4th and 8th grade class in Hampshire County to visit our site in conjunction with their studies of West Virginia history, but we will be happy to schedule visits from any grade level, club or other group from Hampshire County or the surrounding counties. Home school groups are also encouraged to come. For further information or to schedule a date and time, contact our school program coordinator Maryanne Lister.
